Can Dogs Drink Powerade?

Can Dogs Have Powerade?

We can find plenty of ways to beat the heat. For some of us, that means popsicles or a dip in the pool. We may even rehydrate with some sports drinks like Powerade. Powerade can help us replenish electrolytes and hydrate an imbalance from sweating out all of the good stuff that gives us energy.

We know what works for us, but what about our pets? How do you hydrate a dog? With Powerade? There are plenty of areas we can find similarities with our pets, but this is not one of those times. When it comes to surviving the heat and rehydrating, our pets could not be more different. Can you give your dog Powerade?

Answer: Yes, but it is not the best option. If you are giving your pet Powerade it can be assumed you believe your dog is dehydrated. Despite your good intentions, you should know that water can do just as good a job at hydrating your pup. We can handle a bottle of Powerade from time to time, but the additives make it unhealthy for our pets. Even Pedialyte is a better option due to the low amounts of sugar and sodium.

If you are giving your dog Powerade for any other reason, it is still not suggested. The high amounts of non-nutritious ingredients can cause obesity or diabetes in your pet, making hydration the least of your problems.

Health Benefits

Powerade is a great source of electrolytes and hydrations for us, but for pet’s needs, you also need to consider the high amounts of sodium and sugar. This can completely undo whatever it is you are hoping to accomplish by giving Powerade to your pet. Since your dog is much smaller than you, consider how the high amounts of sugar will affect their health. A very likely scenario ends with your pet battling diabetes or obesity.

When we think about sports drinks, we rarely consider all the additives. Our system can handle these ingredients with much more ease than a dog. The wrong additive can even lead to diarrhea, vomiting, or harming your dog’s digestive system. This can be especially true with certain sweeteners frequently used in Powerade, like Xylitol. It is best to just avoid the drink altogether.

Things to keep in mind

Us humans may need a bit of help when it comes to staying hydrated. Our diet is much more complex than a dog’s, so we can follow simple rules when it comes to taking care of them. While you may think Powerade can help rejuvenate your pet, it is pretty unlikely. If you find your pet is becoming dehydrated or vomiting, Powerade is not going to be as effective as some other options like Pedialyte.

Pedialyte may not be helpful if your pet is already suffering from dehydration. Often times the dehydration of your pet can only be treated by a vet. In which case you should rush your dog to the vet immediately. If you are unsure about some of the dehydration symptoms to look for, here is what it includes:

  • Sunken eyes
  • Heavy or even abnormal panting
  • Skin becomes less elastic
  • Your dog’s nose, eyes, and mouth have become dry

Your dog is not going to sweat like a human. Instead, the heat will be let out through their mouth in the form of panting. You may notice this when taking your dog for a walk on a hot day. Dog’s are easily dehydrated, which is why it is always important to look out for these symptoms. It is true, dogs can become dehydrated from vomiting or diarrhea, but hot weather is more likely to be the source.

If you are unable to grab some Pedialyte for your pet and only have sports drinks on hand, consider diluting the drink a bit before feeding it to your pet. Aim for a 1:1 ratio of Powerade to water, this way some of the sodium and sugar will be diluted. This combination will still work hard to hydrate your pet.

If dehydration symptoms continue after providing your pet with plenty to drink, you may want to contact your vet. The dehydration may have progressed to the point that professional help is needed.

Take preventative steps to make sure your dog does not become dehydrated. Always have a water bottle and doggie bowl on hand. Especially during hot summer days. Keep a close eye on your best friend and hydrate regularly.

Final Thoughts

A dehydrated pet can be a scary experience for everyone. The important thing is not to panic and call your vet right away. If you suspect your pet is beginning to become dehydrated, be sure to provide them with some water or Pedialyte. Either of these can help your dog rehydrate and get back to his normal self. If Powerade appears to be your only option, be sure to dilute it.
